To acknowledge and celebrate the indigenous name of Fraser Island:

K’gari

When I first explored the world’s largest sand island it was made known to me only as “Fraser Island”. Captivated by its natural beauty, I wasn’t concerned with labels, but immersed in trying to capture its essence on film.

Time passes (all too quickly) and many things change. In September 2021, the official name changed from Fraser Island to K’gari. In the language of the indigenous Butchulla people, K’gari means “Paradise”. I can’t think of a more appropriate name.

Below are some other examples of Butchulla names. I hope to learn others as I continue to discover more about K’gari.
