K’gari (Fraser Island) was World Heritage listed in 1992 as a site of international significance. The island contains unique landscapes of exceptional beauty.
K’gari is the world’s largest sand island.
There are many archaeological remains recording thousands of years of culture and tradition for the Butchulla people.
At approximately 123 kilometres in length and up to 22 kilometres in width it is Queensland’s largest island.
The recent history of the island includes periods of sand mining and logging.
The name “Fraser” Island is connected to Eliza Fraser - a Scottish woman who was shipwrecked on the island in 1836.
